Driving in Haringey

The London Borough of Haringey is an exciting and community minded London Borough which is sometimes described as part of Inner London and sometimes as part of Outer London. It has a very varied demographic, with areas of high prosperity and extreme poverty. The wealthy zones of Highgate, Muswell Hill and Crouch End contrast dramatically with areas in the east of the borough which are some of the most deprived in the UK.

Haringey borders the boroughs of Enfield, Waltham Forest, Hackney, Islington, Camden and Barnet and includes some well known landmarks such as Alexandra Palace with its surrounding parkland, and Bruce Castle, a Grade I listed 16th Century manor house in 20 acres of green space. Finsbury Park and Clissold Park are wonderful nearby open spaces with cafes, and even a mini zoo.

Haringey offers a huge amount of choice in the way of entertainment with clubs, cinemas, theatres and art galleries, as well as dozens of trendy pubs. The Salisbury was recently named by Time Out as one of the best pubs in North London. For all the usual high street names go to Shopping City in Wood Green or the arty shops and boutiques in Crouch End and Muswell Hill.

It’s a mere 5.5 miles from the centre of London on the A103 or the A4202 but don’t be fooled, if you opt for the car over the tube you’ll be looking at a possible 60 minute journey or more depending on traffic. The A1 passes through Haringey and is one of London's main roads. It links to the M1 and the A1(M) motorways, and on to Northern England and Scotland while the North Circular Road (or A406) is a Central London ring road which arcs over the top of the borough. It connects to the M4, M1 and M11, and in turn, to the M25 and on to all parts of the UK. However, the North Circular is frequently featured on local traffic reports because of congestion problems, particularly at Bounds Green in Haringey. Plan your journey well and listen out for traffic reports.
