Driving in the South West

The South West contains some truly iconic destinations, including Stonehenge, the New Forest, the Eden Project and of course the fantastic beaches of the longest regional coastline in Britain. The region’s biggest city is Bristol, and other major conurbations include Plymouth, Bath, Swindon and Bournemouth.

In terms of weather, the region is greatly affected by the Atlantic and its climatic events. The South West peninsula is prone to rare but very heavy rainfall events lasting between 5 and 15 hours, and some areas such as the Somerset Levels are regularly affected by flooding. As the mildest region of the UK, lying snow is not a frequent problem, but the region has on occasion experienced some of the most severe blizzards to affect the country.

The South West overall scores well for road safety, with the highest risk road currently the A4151 between Nailford and the A48. The South West has the lowest population density of all the British regions; little surprise then that its motorway network is limited to the M4, which connects the major hub of Bristol to London and Wales, and the M5 which carries traffic as far southwest as Exeter. The A303 is a major artery linking Hampshire and Devon, which can come under strain during peak times for motorists heading down to the Devon and Cornwall peninsula.

As a popular holiday destination the South West often has to deal with congestion on key access routes during the school holidays. Urban blackspots include Bristol city centre, which has long had a bad reputation for congestion. This has been improving in recent years, though Newfoundland Way, Perry Road, Bridge Valley Road and Clarence Road in Bristol remain traffic hotspots.
